Ballet Hispanico

Ballet Hispanico
Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro
With the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra
Artistic Director Arturo O’Farrill

December 8, 7:30 p.m.
Mahalia Jackson Theater

The winter’s night heats up with the gorgeous and sexy Ballet Hispanico and the 20-member, Grammy Award-winning Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra in a sizzling evening of Latin music and dance. Celebrated as “hands down the leading Hispanic-American dance company” (Buenos Aires Herald), the company brings program of three high-octane works filled with the infectious rhythms of Cuban, jazz and big-band music and the stylish Latin social dances of Mambo, Rumba, Salsa, and Cha Cha. In Tito on Timbale, a tribute to the music of master percussionist Tito Puente, choreographer William Whitener captures the joy and intricacies of social dance through cascading patterns and sensual partnering. The intoxicating Club Havana, created by Cuban choreographer Pedro Ruiz, is just pure Latin dancing at its best with all the mystique of a sultry nightclub in Old Havana, while Vilaro’s Asuka celebrates the vivid life and music of the legendary Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz. The result is a fiery evening that “makes you want to get up and dance.” The New York Times.

“Ballet Hispanico is a good-time company…sleek, gorgeous dancers blending modern, ballroom and ballet in fizzy cocktails that go down easy.” —The New York Sun

“The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra fuels dancing and joy.” —The Gilmore Festival
